As a homegrown brand, Grab Malaysia continues to make significant strides in Penang, blending technology with economic empowerment and fostering inclusive growth. Since its launch in Penang in 2014, Grab has provided nearly 70,000 local driver- and delivery-partners, including over 350 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and more than 2,000 women, with a platform to earn an income through technology-driven solutions.
In 2023 alone, Grab partners in Penang collectively earned over RM280 million on the platform, underscoring the company’s critical role in the state’s economy.
At the recent Sembang TechTarik event in Penang, Ben Chin, Director of Country Strategy & Outer Cities, Grab Malaysia, expressed confidence in the state's digital future, stating, “Penang’s vision to become a digitally engaged and innovative state by 2030 reflects its dedication to blending technology with everyday life. By providing MSMEs with cutting-edge digital tools, we’ve seen a 5% year-on-year growth in Penang, with over half of these businesses maintaining 5-star ratings from millions of food lovers. Through our platform, we amplify local businesses, enhance tourism experiences, and contribute to Penang’s dynamic digital transformation.”
Simplifying Travel and Supporting Penang’s Tourism Industry
As Grab’s platform reaches 1 in 20 people across Southeast Asia, it continues to play a crucial role in connecting communities and supporting Penang’s tourism ecosystem. With 65% of foreign tourists in Malaysia using Grab, the platform is pivotal in connecting travellers with local attractions, enabling them to discover authentic experiences.
Recently launched, the Grab Tourist Pack offers international tourists immediate savings on rides and meals, further enriching their exploration of the region. Available in seven countries, including Malaysia, this initiative boosts local businesses by providing savings of up to MYR 65 for just MYR 3.50, fostering greater visibility and sales for local enterprises.
Real Stories of Growth and Empowerment
Grab’s platform has made a tangible difference in the lives of local drivers and businesses. For instance, Mohamad Heruan, who joined Grab in 2018 after a low-income job as a security guard, has seen his income triple, providing him with the financial stability he had long sought. Grab’s flexible hours, weekly incentives, and data insights have allowed him to balance work and life, transforming his future.
Another success story is Muhammad Shafiq bin Abdul Hamid, a PWD who joined Grab in December 2023 after a career-ending accident. Through Grab, Shafiq has found not just a reliable source of income but also the freedom to work on his terms, showcasing the empowerment Grab offers to PWD drivers in Penang.
In the food and beverage sector, Nasi Kandar Deen Mutiara, which started in 2022 with a single outlet in Kubang Semang, embraced technology to drive growth. As a GrabFood Signature merchant, their sales have skyrocketed, leading to the opening of multiple outlets across Penang. Similarly, Unknown Cafe & Bistro, which joined GrabFood in 2021, weathered the pandemic and quickly became a top success in Penang, now operating multiple outlets and expanding with new concepts.
Commitment to Penang’s Future
Grab Malaysia remains dedicated to supporting Penang’s goal of becoming a vibrant, digitally connected hub. By empowering communities, fostering innovation, and creating economic opportunities, Grab is helping shape a more inclusive future for Penang.
Through these efforts, Grab is not only simplifying everyday life with technology but also creating meaningful economic impact, driving Penang’s growth as a hub for innovation, tourism, and opportunity.
