Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has re-established its dominance in the global aviation landscape, securing the No. 4 spot in the 2026 Skytrax World Airport Awards—a significant climb from its No. 6 position last year. Beyond the overall ranking, HKIA was specifically recognised for operational excellence, winning “World’s Best Airport Security Processing” and “World’s Best Airport Washrooms”, a testament to its recent integration of facial recognition gates and CT-driven screening.

This resurgence comes as HKIA accelerates its “SKYTOPIA” development, aiming to transform the hub into a comprehensive Airport City. A major milestone in this expansion is scheduled for 27 May 2026, when 15 airlines (including Hong Kong Express and Greater Bay Airlines) will relocate check-in operations to the newly commissioned Terminal 2.

ASEAN Context: The Rise of Regional Contenders

While HKIA celebrates its comeback, ASEAN airports are showing remarkable upward mobility, challenging the traditional hierarchy of global travel hubs.

  • Singapore Changi (No. 1): Changi has reclaimed and held the World’s Best Airport title for the 14th time in 2026. With a record 69.98 million passengers in 2025, it remains the gold standard for integrated leisure and transit efficiency.
  • Soekarno-Hatta, Jakarta (No. 22): Rising three places, Jakarta is now knocking on the door of the global Top 20. Its Immigration Service was also ranked in the global Top 10 for 2026, reflecting Indonesia’s push for “seamless” entry protocols.
  • Suvarnabhumi, Bangkok (No. 36): Thailand’s main gateway climbed three spots, driven by improvements in operational technology and a newly expanded land area that reinforces its position as a primary tourist hub.
  • KLIA, Malaysia: While currently the largest airport by land area in Southeast Asia (100 sq km), KLIA continues to focus on its “Aeropolis” masterplan to improve its standing against the surging competition from Jakarta and Bangkok.
