According to the World Bank Group, 18.9% of private sector businesses in Malaysia experienced electrical outages from March 2015 to May 2016. With the average duration of a typical electrical outage at 3.8 hours, more than 10% of businesses had backup power in the form of generators.<\/p>\n
The study also showed that businesses that utilized generators used them regularly, with over 20% of the electrical power consumed by these businesses, supplied by these generators.<\/p>\n
Curtis Lim, Malaysia Country Manager, Electrical Sector of Eaton said that it was vital for companies to take proactive measures to fail-safe their operations from electrical outages.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cPower is a fundamental requirement for many industries in Malaysia. It ensures manufacturing output, continuous data connectivity and uninterrupted operations across departments. When this important requirement is disrupted, many businesses suffer losses. Situations like these can be prevented with backup power systems and electrical circuit protection, which are among the end-to-end solutions that many of Eaton\u2019s customers use.\u201d<\/p>\n
These Eaton\u2019s state of the art solutions were showcased at a one-of-a-kind Eaton Mobile Truck, an 11-square meter interactive mobile showroom, during the company\u2019s Techday inn Subang Jaya today.<\/p>\n
The Mobile Truck highlighted power management technologies that focused on reliability, efficiency and safety.<\/p>\n
Powering Malaysian Industries Forward<\/p>\n
Thai AirAsia, which is a joint venture between Malaysian owned AirAsia and Thailand’s Asia Aviation, uses Eaton\u2019s uninterrupted power supply (UPS) solutions for its sensitive networking equipment. \u201cThe aviation industry as a whole, relies heavily on clean power supply, especially when managing power sensitive equipment,\u201d said Lim.<\/p>\n
\u201cAirAsia for example, expanded its operations to Thailand in 2004 under Thai AirAsia, and was having constant power issues as the country\u2019s power supply to many provincial airports was deemed unstable. Thai AirAsia recognized the need for a reliable IT system backed by a robust UPS solution. To date, many of our UPS solutions are installed at all Thai AirAsia\u2019s hubs to create an effective networking system.\u201d<\/p>\n
Besides aviation, the manufacturing industry also requires uninterrupted power to maintain assembly line uptime and reduce operation costs. \u201cMany industries require a robust infrastructure which includes uninterrupted electrical supply to maintain profitability and to continuously contribute to the nation\u2019s economy. The manufacturing industry alone recorded a sales value of RM68.5 billion in just the month of March 2018,\u201d added Lim.<\/p>\n
Data centre systems are also on the rise, indicating the country\u2019s focus on big data and analytics. Gartner, Inc has projected that sales will increase from RM2.25bil last year to RM2.33bil this year, and RM2.35bil in 2019.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are an increasing number of businesses in Malaysia who are relying on cloud services, and as Malaysia moves towards a mature digital economy, more and more businesses will be dependent on data centers. With the increasing demand, data centers must be equipped with power redundancies to maintain business continuity and prevent downtime,\u201d said Lim.<\/p>\n
A separate report by Technavio revealed that the data center construction market in South East Asia by electrical construction was valued at USD1.6bil in 2015 and likely to reach USD3.13bil in 2020. Electrical construction of data centers includes infrastructure requirements such as uninterrupted power supply (UPS) and generators, which provide backup power during disruptions that might interfere with workloads and harm data center equipment.<\/p>\n
