In a recent interview with Ruben Schrijver, General Manager of Hyatt Centric Kota Kinabalu, we gained insights into the hotel's first year of operation as Southeast Asia's first Hyatt Centric brand. Ruben shared exciting details about how the hotel has embraced its role as a launchpad for travellers to explore Sabah, blending nature, culture, and technology seamlessly into the guest experience.
Ruben stated that the Hyatt Centric Kota Kinabalu has had an incredible journey in its first year of operation. He commended the dedicated and creative staff who have played a pivotal role in making the hotel a launchpad for travellers. The hotel encourages guests to explore Sabah and experience the local culture. Ruben highlighted the collaboration with local partners, including Happy Plastic and street tour artist Jared, which has inspired innovative ideas and experiences for guests. As a launchpad, the hotel encourages guests to embark on adventures such as boat trips, mountain climbs, jungle treks, and visits to local markets. The concept is to be a starting point for guests to discover the beauty and diversity of Sabah.
Hyatt Centric Kota Kinabalu has implemented various technological features to enhance the guest experience. Ruben mentioned keyless check-in, allowing guests to use their mobile phones as digital keys via the World of Hyatt mobile app. In-room casting solutions enable guests to stream personal content on the hotel's large 55" televisions. The hotel also employs a chatbot to assist with guest requests, making technology uncomplicated and accessible. Additionally, the hotel stands out as one of the first Hyatt hotels in Asia, where guests can access their rooms via their Apple Watch.
The hotel's design blends nature and culture, creating a unique ambience. Ruben described the lobby's wooden walls and stone floors as resembling the trunk of a majestic tree. Seashell floor numbers, carpet motifs representing local ethnic groups, and ample sunlight enhance the experience. As guests ascend, the hotel's top floor offers stunning views of sunsets, the sea, and the jungle. Ruben emphasised the presence of creative artworks throughout the hotel, including coasters by local artist Binjai and a hand-carved wood sculpture by Anniketnni Madian. The hotel also features a delicate butterfly creation by Raku Inoue and a stunning piece of framed paper cuts representing natural materials. The hotel's lounge provides a communal space where travellers and local guests can engage in discussions and admire visually striking artworks.
Hyatt Centric Kota Kinabalu is committed to environmental sustainability. The hotel recently received Silver Certification from GreenRe, Malaysia's leading green building certification body, recognising its commitment to green building excellence. Ruben outlined measures to reduce food waste by 20% and eliminate single-use plastics. The hotel recycles condensate water, uses LED light bulbs, and offers refillable drinking water in meeting rooms. Collaborations with local organisations, such as Arm of Hope Sabah, involve food donations and cleaning services to support the community. Ruben emphasised that embracing sustainability is a collective responsibility.
The hotel's target market of younger, modern travellers is catered to with unique food and beverage offerings. The menu features sharing concepts using locally sourced ingredients and cooking methods, with captivating stories behind each dish. The youthful team at the hotel adds vibrancy, connecting with adventurous guests. Unique offerings like jersey hoody bathrobes in guest rooms and themed staycations, such as Adventurous Couples and Girls Getaway packages, are designed to appeal to the hotel's dynamic and youthful clientele.
In conclusion, Hyatt Centric Kota Kinabalu has carved a unique niche in Southeast Asia's hospitality scene by seamlessly blending innovation, culture, and sustainability. Ruben Schrijver's vision and passion have played a pivotal role in making this hotel a must-visit destination for modern travellers seeking authentic experiences in Sabah.
