It is full speed ahead for Cyberview Sdn Bhd’s push to elevate Cyberjaya’s offerings as a model for Smart City developments nationwide. Through its partnership with two innovation challenges targeted at Malaysian STEM students in July and hosted at Cyberjaya, the Tech Hub Enabler gave challenge participants a glimpse of the work that goes into formulating solutions for Smart City issues.

Participants in the Cyberview track of Innovate Malaysia Design Competition 2017 were challenged to propose Internet of Things (IoT) solutions to improve city traffic management issues including urban parking and traffic flow management. For the Selangor leg of the Young Innovators Challenge 2017, Cyberview sponsored 8 schools in preparation for the competition with the assistance of some 20 Cyberjaya Ambassadors – students hand-picked to contribute towards Cyberjaya’s continued development.

“We’re at an exciting time here in Cyberjaya as we set into motion collaborations that will accelerate this smart city into the future – bringing to life a vision of a thriving tech city with a vibrant community within a smart urban setting,” said Mohd. Najib Ibrahim, Acting Managing Director, Cyberview Sdn Bhd. “Cyberjaya’s offerings in this space effectively makes us the ideal host and collaborator for innovation programmes such as Innovation Malaysia Design Competition 2017 and Young Innovators Challenge 2017. In addition to promoting interest in STEM subjects and helping Malaysian youths develop valuable life-skills, our support for these programmes aim to actively engage Malaysians in projects aimed at advancing national goals including those in innovation and entrepreneurship.”

Cyberview’s support for these innovation challenges are the latest in a line of similar initiatives driven by the company under its Living Lab Talent programme. One such recent initiative saw a gathering of start-ups from the Cyberview Living Lab Accelerator (CLLA) Programme sharing industry insight and personal experiences of being self-made entrepreneurs with students from Multimedia University.

Cyberview’s Living Lab initiative with its four component programmes Talent, Accelerator, Pilot and  Enterprise complements Cyberjaya’s Smart City development initiatives; both by offering the city as a test-bed for innovation and entrepreneurship as well as strengthening Cyberjaya’s innovation ecosystem with solutions rolled out for piloting and testing. For example, Cyberjaya’s residents currently benefit from a city-wide network of environmental sensors initially rolled out as pilot projects on the city’s Long Range, Low Power Wide Area Network (LoRa) infrastructure. Hence, solutions designed by the winning teams in either innovation challenges also have the potential of someday being piloted in Cyberjaya under the Living Lab programmes.

“Talent discovery and development are part and parcel of what we do here in Cyberview, particularly through our Living Lab initiatives,” said Mahadhir Aziz, Head of Technology Hub Development Division, Cyberview Sdn Bhd. “By starting the process early and engaging our youths in various innovation programmes, we not only strengthen Malaysia’s talent pipeline in the area of STEM but also raise a generation of Malaysians capable of leveraging technology to solve the issues of today and tomorrow. This is particularly critical in light of the rapid development of both Cyberjaya and the country as a whole.”
