In a major push toward building a digital-first workforce, Alibaba Cloud has launched the KaryaWAN AI Challenge in collaboration with Malaysia’s National AI Office (NAIO). This nationwide initiative is designed to test real-world applications of cutting-edge video generation AI while activating local creative and technical talent.

The initiative’s name, a combination of karya (creative work) and Alibaba Cloud’s Wan2.7 visual generation model, symbolises the fusion of human ingenuity and machine intelligence to drive the nation’s digital transformation.

The AI Sandbox: From Ideation to Real-World Output

The KaryaWAN AI Challenge moves beyond theoretical coding to challenge participants to create functional, AI-augmented digital assets.

The challenge awards RM24,000 in cash prizes and trophies, with the winners set to be announced at the end of June 2026. Supporting partners include academic stakeholders alongside specialized groups like the Persatuan Kreatif AI Malaysia (PeKA) and Prompters Malaya, ensuring the initiative stays anchored in the local creator economy.

Strategic Outlook: The “Talent-First” Innovation Pipeline

The launch of the KaryaWAN initiative points to a critical trend: infrastructure without high-value talent is a stranded asset. This direct engagement model matches the patterns we are seeing across the ASEAN ecosystem:

Editor’s Take: Democratising the Digital Engine

For the Malaysian Business reader, the KaryaWAN challenge is a welcome step toward building true Sovereign Intelligence. For Malaysia to extract real value from the RM426.7 billion in approved investments flowing into the country, the workforce must move up the value chain from data centre operators to AI innovators.

As Sam Majid, Head of NAIO, pointed out, this challenge translates national strategies into practical, on-the-ground outcomes. By putting advanced models like Wan2.7 directly into the hands of local creators, Malaysia is lowering the “Complexity Tax” for its creative industries, ensuring that the country’s digital transformation remains inclusive, innovative, and highly competitive.
