In a strategic effort to bolster the region’s next generation of executive talent, the Asia School of Business (ASB) and Tan Sri Dr. Lim Wee Chai, Founder and Executive Chairman of Top Glove Corporation Bhd, have established a RM1 million permanent scholarship endowment dedicated to nurturing future leaders across Malaysia and the ASEAN region.
The Tan Sri Dr Lim Wee Chai Scholarship for Future ASEAN Leaders will function as a perpetual fund, preserving the principal contribution while utilizing investment returns to provide sustainable, long-term funding for high-potential candidates regardless of their financial backgrounds.
Bridging Private Philanthropy and Higher Education
The collaboration pairs ASB, founded in 2015 in partnership with the MIT Sloan School of Management, with one of Malaysia’s most prominent industrial figures. The initiative underscores a growing push within Southeast Asia to align corporate philanthropy with regional leadership development as ASEAN’s economic weight grows globally.
“ASB was established as a long-term investment in human capital and institutional excellence,” said Tan Sri Dr. Zeti Akhtar Aziz, Founding Chair and Co-Chair of the Board of Governors at ASB. “Ultimately, the future of Malaysia and ASEAN will be determined by the quality of its institutions, and by the calibre of the people who lead them.”
Dr. Zeti noted that the fund aims to democratize access to world-class executive education, ensuring financial constraints do not cap the potential of the region’s top talent.
Focus on Ethical, Adaptive Leadership
Speaking on the motivation behind the RM1 million endowment, Tan Sri Dr. Lim Wee Chai emphasized the need for resilient, principled leadership in an increasingly volatile global market.
“Education creates opportunity, and opportunity creates progress,” Dr. Lim stated. “Our future prosperity will depend not only on economic growth, but on the quality of our people… We need leaders who are capable, ethical, resilient, and committed to serving society with integrity.”

Strengthening ASEAN’s Talent Pipeline
By reducing financial barriers, ASB aims to attract a broader, more diverse cohort of emerging executives whose varied market perspectives can enrich the classroom environment.
Professor Joseph Cherian, President and Dean of ASB, highlighted that partnerships between higher education and private enterprise remain crucial for regional competitiveness:
“By removing financial barriers, this scholarship will enable ASB to attract talented individuals… whose diverse experiences and perspectives will enrich our learning community.”
As Southeast Asia faces rapid technological shifts and changing trade dynamics, the endowment aims to secure a steady pipeline of decision-makers equipped to steer both private enterprise and public institutions into the future.
